Casting agencies in South Africa work with a range few countries can match: twelve official languages since South African Sign Language was added in 2023, nine provinces, and faces, accents, skills and places of every kind. For a production, that range is the point: the right grandmother, the right dialect, the right dirt road.

Agencies sit in the middle of it. A production sends a brief, and the agency finds, puts forward and looks after the people who fit it, often within a day. Agents know their people well: who rides a horse, who grew up speaking Setswana, who signs. That knowledge takes years to build, and it is what productions rely on.

The friction

The same range brings the first friction point agencies face: a brief can ask for more than any one roster holds.

A brief arrives at four in the afternoon: a woman in her sixties, fluent in Tshivenda, at home on a farm, self-tapes by noon tomorrow. The agency puts forward its strongest matches. The exact fit may well exist, say a performer in Polokwane, but she is not on the agency’s books, and there is no shared place to look for her before noon.

It works the other way too. A production in Cape Town that needs an agency with Tshivenda speakers may not know which agency to call.

Diversity that cannot be seen does not get cast. The performer misses the work, the agency misses a booking it could have made, and the production settles for a near fit.

The objective

reCREWt aims to widen the pool agencies can search, not to replace them. What is in place now:

  • Profiles for everyone on the call sheet: free for cast, crew and production businesses, with accounts for casting agencies.
  • One national directory, searchable by province and city, including performers who are not on any agency’s books.
  • A Job Board and events calendar open to registered members.

For agencies, reCREWt adds two things:

  • Being found. Your agency has its own profile, so productions looking for your services can find you.
  • Your own sign-up link. Talent who join through it are shown as represented by your agency and pay a reduced Professional fee.

What we are working towards: languages, skills and playing age that can be searched, and casting calls and contact through the platform, so a brief can reach further than the usual phone list.

reCREWt does not represent talent and takes no commission. Agents keep their judgement and their relationships. We hope to add a wider pool to search, and a place where productions can find them.
